TEACH WITH CONFIDENCE
How to boost confidence in tutoring.
Are you interested in tutoring but don’t have any guidance on how to start? This video will give you a few valuable tips on what to do before you start your tutoring journey!
Be Prepared
Prepare all the teaching materials such as books, stationary, a whiteboard and colorful markers. Extra materials, such as green screens and presentation slides, can be prepared for online class.
Be Well Organized
Reference materials highlighting each chapter's key points and essential context should be prepared ahead of time for use in your classroom. You can demonstrate your knowledge by drawing mind maps or writing it out in bullet points.
Do Mock Teaching
Either record yourself or run through some practise scenarios with close friends and/or family. Using this strategy, you can identify your strengths and areas for growth as a tutor.
TUTORING TECHNIQUES
Teaching strategies for effective student learning.
For you to know what method of teaching you need to implement for your students, you must know what kind of students you are dealing with.
Active Student
The typical behaviour of students who fall into this category is to participate very actively in class discussions and to always respond by asking and answering questions. They exude an upbeat and optimistic attitude in addition to their high levels of energy.
Passive Student
Passive students learn independently and don’t put much effort into their academic performance. They are typically pessimistic and may be resistant to education. You, as a tutor, should pay closer attention to this student and keep tabs on their development. Don’t hold them to unrealistic standards, but do encourage them constantly.
TUTOR CHARACTERISTICS
Qualities of
a good tutor.
For you to know what method of teaching you need to implement for your students, you must know what kind of students you are dealing with.
Empathy
A great tutor can connect with students and understand their feelings. Be kind when they're down and happy when they're up.
Positive mental attitude
Thinking positively will help them avoid negative vibes in class. Always greet them with a smile and answer their questions.
Open to change
Make room for new ideas, systems, and approaches. Be willing to listen to others' ideas and avoid roadblocks.
Be a role model
Set an example for your students and earn their respect. This will strengthen your bond, resulting in a more effective tutoring session.
Creative
You can differentiate yourself from other tutors by employing teaching strategies that are creative and inspirational for your students.
Sense of humor
Who doesn't appreciate a good laugh from their tutor? A humorous attitude breaks down barriers and brightens the mood. Making your students laugh is a way to earn their respect.
PEDAGOGICAL METHOD
The methods and practices of a teacher.
Pedagogy is the art and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept. This tutorial will give you more explanation on a few pedagogy methods and their benefits!
METHOD 1
Pausing for Effect
A pause can help your listeners figure out when one phrase, sentence, or paragraph ends and when the next starts. Your students can only absorb certain information at a time. Taking a break allows them to keep up with you! Finally, pausing gives your audience time to think about what you’re saying and start making connections with their own experiences or knowledge.
METHOD 2
Transitioning
A transition is a break from formal learning sessions where you can play songs or games with your students. This will help you to keep disruptions and behavioural problems to a minimum, maximize instructional time, and keep the learning environment as good as possible for your students.
STEP 3
Chunking
People use the term “chunks” to refer to how they organize different pieces of information. Chunking is the practice of breaking up chapters into shorter, bite-size pieces that are more manageable and easier to remember. This method accommodates working memory, prioritizes the information you’re presenting and is organised and straightforward.
PLAN YOUR LESSON
Tutoring lesson plan.
A lesson plan is a tutor’s daily guide for what students need to learn, how it will be taught, and how learning will be measured. Why does every tutor need to have a lesson plan?
To know what to teach by looking at the previous lesson
A lesson plan is needed to ensure every detail of the session is on track, and it will also make it easier for you to start a new session with your student.
To set the objective of the class and expect an outcome
List down all the objectives prior to class and don’t forget to focus on what outcome you are expecting from every session.
The content of the syllabus can be delivered in a systematic process
Being systematic can let you manage time wisely throughout the tutoring session by only focusing on whatever you have planned for each session.
Tutor can evaluate students' understanding of the lesson
By preparing a lesson plan, you can track your students’ records from the beginning and at the same time provide evaluation to improve their performances.
For further references
You may have new students in the future, and a complete lesson plan can be referred to easily if you consistently update the progress of your students.

KNOW WHERE TO START
Student assessment.
A tutor’s job is to make sure that the goals of education are being met. Assessment is the most important part of this job. Assessments can change your students’ grades.
Assessment can be done with pop quizzes, games, and short assignments. You can make tests of any kind to help your students remember what they learned and make sure they understand everything you have taught them. Assessment can speed up their responses and make them remember important points. It can also make your tutoring sessions more interesting and help them prepare for a bigger test or exam.
